My Philosophy

When birthing a transmission feels overwhelming, the answer isn’t to tame the wildness of your ideas or impose a rigid structure from the outside in. The solution is to listen for what’s missing and dive into the subterranean river of your language—entering a collaborative excavation that encourages you to stay loyal to the soul beneath the syntax and write a manuscript that is utterly, unmistakably your own.

I'm a book development editor, collaborative writer, and book doula. I help everyone from first-time visionaries to established experts shape proposals and manuscripts that sell and remain unmistakably their own.

I don’t "edit" in the traditional sense. I listen for what’s missing.

I work with authors, artists, healers, and visionaries—people who are not simply creating content, but birthing transmissions that are meant to change and open hearts and minds. People whose work is singular, soulful, unrepeatable. Whether they know it or not, they’re midwifing something holy, something unruly and with a life utterly its own, something the world needs. I help bring that work into form with precision, depth, and the kind of coherence that comes from loving a rollicking good story.

My strength lies in perceiving the energetic underpinnings of language, the subterranean river of a paragraph, the emotional frequency behind a sentence that helps a reader feel held even if you're challenging them to go somewhere completely unfamiliar. My real gift is helping you to identify the mythos that's trying to break through the surface of a too-tidy arc. I seek clarity but I also seek honesty. Instead of trying to scrub your voice clean, I challenge you to lead with your authenticity and connect with what’s trying to be remembered through the writing. And I help you write it into being.

Think of my work this way: editing as personal mythmaking and initiation.

Rather than imposing a structure or thinking I know best, I excavate for it. Through our work together, I'll encourage you to stay loyal to the soul beneath the syntax. Yes, craft is crucial, but your voice is much more important and will call in the readers who are meant to connect with your work. I am concerned with the rhythm of breath, of longing, of the erotic intelligence that lives in your unspooling sentences. I don’t believe the best writing is simply clean or clever; it's alive and present. It titillates and devastates. It asks better questions rather than providing the reader with tidy answers. It complicates matters. It leaves your reader changed.

So, working with me won't entail taming the wildness of your ideas. It'll require a greater sense of daring to trust them. Together, we’ll uncover the myth that undergirds your project, the pattern that's eager to emerge, and the voice that is unmistakably yours. I’ll challenge you to go deeper, to break the spell of perfectionism, and to meet your audience with everything you've ever wanted to say without knowing how.

I've worked with everyone from performance poets to Big 5 publishers. My work lives on a trajectory from subatomic processes to the entire freakin' cosmos. I bring a background in myth, poetics, narrative psychology, trauma-informed somatics, and embodied creative practice—but what I offer is about so much more than a credential. I strive to give you a fierce, compassionate field of resonance that helps you hear yourself more clearly and write from the depths of that knowing.

You'll get more than a clean draft by the time we're done working together. You’ll walk away with a clearer voice, a deeper sense of creative purpose, and a manuscript or body of work that is utterly, unmistakably you.

If we work together, consider it a sacred contract.

What I mean by personal mythmaking

Personal mythmaking is the cornerstone of the work I do, and it's the thing that sets me apart from most editors and collaborative writers.

Personal mythmaking is a process of helping a person walk through and excavate the stories, myths, and motifs that make up their own inner landscape.

I'm interested in mythology because mythology is ultimately world-building. It reveals to us the treasures and allies and resources that already exist within us. So when I talk about personal mythmaking, I am not talking about making up a story about yourself or creating a persona. I'm talking about embracing your nature, your capacity, your history, your potentiality—all of which lives within the terrain of mythology, in both individual myths and the actual mythic structures that live beneath those stories (for example, death/resurrection/rebirth, the hero’s journey framework, the creation-to-apocalypse journey, the nested frame, or the generational succession)

Myths are so powerful because they reveal what is, through metaphors and narratives that connect us more deeply with the ecosystems from which we arise. So when I talk about personal mythmaking, what I'm talking about is making all these things that live beneath the surface of our lives—usually in the detritus of our dreams and our collective unconscious—visible, and turning them into raw material we can work with throughout the creative process.

I want to be clear that myth isn’t meant to buttress ego-based dogma. It’s about collecting narrative power by bringing to the forefront the stories about who you are, in such a way that you can catalyze those stories for more potent connection with yourself and your audience.

Now, let’s go back to that word excavate.

You know the scenario.

You have a body of work that you're truly proud of. And you've already done all the hard stuff. You've established the expertise, lived the transformation, and allowed your life to be a laboratory of evidence for the ideas you want to share with the world. You know that you have something on your hands that the world needs, and everyone has been telling you so for years. You braved the impossible, pulled yourself up by the bootstraps (and then tossed away those outmoded boots, which perpetuated so much struggle to begin with), and created an extraordinary life. Your desire to change the world has gotten you into trouble before, but it’s also piqued many an attention and offered a solid blueprint for the way things could be.

But when it comes to sitting at your computer and translating the ideas churning in your head onto the page, all you hear are crickets. Writing a book sounds great, even inevitable, in theory, but putting words to your brilliant concept is like watching tumbleweed drifting through a wasteland of inspiration. In fact, the deeper you actually go into your subject, the harder it feels to render it with exquisite clarity, to locate the arc, to get that brilliantly faceted gem of an idea down on paper without making it feel flat and robbing it of its luster.

In truth, expertise doesn't actually make writing easier. It makes it harder because all you can see is everything you're going to be leaving out.

I believe in the gifts that you already have. But writing a book that's worthy of the life you've lived and the thoughts you've thunk is exacting work. it requires vigilance, structure, clarity, and attention to the minutest details. Not to mention it takes sustained time and creative energy that people who are already doing the serious, demanding, public-facing work have little to spare. A book of this depth and rigor requires a deep and rigorous partner who can hold the bigger picture for you as you stay rooted in the expertise. I'll help you locate your arc without diluting the story. Most of all, I'll help you get what's in your head and heart onto the page in a voice that remains powerfully yours.

And here's where I come in.

Nirmala-Writing

Most of my clients are visionaries—scientists, medical doctors, therapists, artists, healers, teachers—whose greatest desire is to impact other people positively and create pathways in place of solid roadblocks. As an experienced book doula, coach, editor, and collaborative writer, I compassionately ferry my clients toward their desired goal: to create a book that blesses others with its wisdom. I help my clients to clarify their fears and blocks around translating their voices into a coherent narrative, so that they can access their passion and desire, and use them as fertilizer for a flourishing garden of words. I also help people identify the flavor and style of their literary voice, connect to their intuition, and approach book writing in a way that takes the pressure out of it and enables them to hone in, with eagle vision, on the essence of what they want to convey.

A book is so much more than a vehicle for getting our work out into the world; it’s a mythical symbol that holds the power of our stories to craft meaning and transmit knowledge that can persist long after we've taken our final breath. A book is an alchemical crucible for the metamorphosis of the author and the reader alike—and it has the capacity to expand the horizons of our world, challenge rancorous or oppressive beliefs, and expose the cartography of the soul so that we can navigate life with greater acuity and awareness.

To write a book for and with another person, to tell their story in a way that maintains fidelity to their life experiences and ideas, entails far more than compiling exhaustive volumes of research and interviews. It’s nothing short of a mind meld…and it requires empathy, openness, and an instinctive understanding of the narrative that wants to come through.

In other words, it's a spiritual transmission in the most practical, tangible sense!

As a Transformational Book Artist,

I don’t just compile your ideas and shape them in a way that’s accessible and grammatically correct—I help you access your innate creativity so that the seed of your story can grow into a mighty tree.

Most visionaries have several books in them that don’t ever come to life, for multiple reasons, ranging from lack of discipline to lack of writing experience. I act as a fellow spelunker and way-shower, catalyzing the process of taking your book from its embryonic stages to its crystal-clear realization in the world.

As a Personal Mythmaker,

it’s my mission to help you bring your larger-than-lifeness into the world and to place it front and center. My path has helped hundreds of individuals access their inner voices so that the birth of their book is less about getting their ideas into final form and more about ensuring that whatever comes through them is faithful to their unique voice and story.

In other words, you can think of me as a channel. It’s my job to help you pluck the spirit of your story from out of the ethers and mold it into realized form.

I don’t employ a predictable, cookie-cutter process. Whether I’m working on a scientific treatise, pop-psychology book, spiritual memoir, novel, or collection of poetry, I consider myself a channel for the larger message that wants to be birthed through you. Together, we’ll work closely, through all the ups and downs of creating a book. I’ll be there every step of the way as we burn the midnight oil, reach epiphanies that are integral to the creative process, and navigate the many dark nights of the soul and magical moments that are sure to emerge.

Think of my work as soul mirroring.

You will learn just as much about yourself as you will about the book (or the play, or the collection of essays for your Substack, or the podcast saga) we're bringing into form together.

This process is an initiation of the soul that's customized to the demands of the project at hand. Although I provide a tight container in terms of deadlines and other logistical aspects of the work, I like to leave as much room as possible for creative discoveries and delightful surprises.

Remember—

You are not writing the book! The book is writing you!
